Phuket isn't just for solo nomads and couples anymore. More families are relocating here every year, drawn by the lifestyle, the weather, the value, and a surprisingly deep bench of international schools. If you're considering the move with kids, the single biggest question is almost always the same: what about school?
Here's a practical, no-nonsense guide to how schooling works in Phuket, what it costs, and how to choose.
The good news: real choice
Phuket punches well above its weight on international education. You'll find British-curriculum schools, the International Baccalaureate (IB), American programmes and bilingual options spread across the island, several with proper campuses, sports facilities and strong university-placement records. This isn't a compromise posting, families routinely school children here from early years all the way through to university entrance.
The schools families talk about most
British International School, Phuket (BISP)
The largest and most academically established on the island. BISP offers a British curriculum alongside the IB for ages 2–18 on a large campus in the Koh Kaew / Kathu area, with serious sports facilities and boarding available, which makes it a draw for families across the region, not just Phuket.
HeadStart International School
A well-regarded British-based school operating across two Phuket campuses, generally positioned in the mid-range on fees. Popular with families wanting a strong, well-rounded British education without flagship-tier pricing.
And more
Beyond these two, the island has additional British, IB and bilingual schools with smaller class sizes or particular specialisms in arts and sport. The right fit depends on your child, your budget and where you live, so build a shortlist and visit.
What it actually costs
School fees will likely be the biggest line in a relocating family's budget, so go in with clear numbers. For the 2026 academic year:
- Entry / bilingual schools: from around 250,000 THB per year.
- Mid-range British day schools: roughly 320,000–700,000 THB per child, per year.
- Flagship British / IB senior years: up to 1,200,000 THB+ per year; boarding adds a further 350,000–650,000 THB.
And remember the extras. On top of tuition, budget for a one-off capital deposit, an annual levy, lunches and bus, exam fees, uniforms and trips. A realistic all-in figure for two children at a quality British day school lands somewhere around 1.2–1.9 million THB a year (roughly USD 33,000–53,000).
Where to live for the school run
Phuket traffic is real, and a long school commute will wear the whole family down. Many families cluster on the west coast around Cherngtalay, Bang Tao and Thalang for proximity to several schools, or choose central areas like Koh Kaew and Chalong that balance school access with everyday convenience. Most schools also run island-wide bus routes, which can widen your options, ask for the route map before you sign a lease.
How to choose (a simple framework)
- Curriculum first: British, IB or American, match it to where your child has been and where they might go next.
- Visit in person: websites all look great. Walk the campus, watch a lesson, talk to current parents.
- Ask about the things that matter to your child: class sizes, EAL support for non-native English speakers, sport, arts, special educational needs.
- Check the exit, not just the entry: exam results and university destinations tell you more than the marketing.
- Factor the commute: a brilliant school 70 minutes away is rarely worth it day after day.
Finding your family's community
Schools give kids an instant social circle, parents often need to build their own. The families who settle fastest plug into the island's community life early: parent groups, sports clubs, weekend meetups. You can find local family-friendly events and groups through our communities page and on SocialGryd, where you can connect with other parents doing the same school run.
Relocating with kids is a bigger leap than going solo, but Phuket makes it more doable than most places its size. Get the school and the neighbourhood right, and the rest of the island's magic does a lot of the parenting for you.
