Bali wins on global nomad visibility, Da Nang wins on value and beach-city practicality, and Chiang Mai wins on routine and depth. None is universally best. The right choice depends on whether you want a social scene, a lower monthly burn or a city where daily life becomes pleasantly boring.

Bali is the loudest option

Canggu and Pererenan are built around people arriving with laptops, ideas and an appetite for expensive coffee. Ubud is calmer and often better value, while Sanur is the practical middle ground for people who want a more settled daily rhythm. Bali is a strong choice if you will actively use the community. It is a poor choice if you expect the island to solve loneliness for you.

Da Nang is the value play

Da Nang gives you a proper city, a long beach, fast internet, affordable food and a compact expat scene. An Thuong and My Khe are the easiest starting points for newcomers. Hai Chau feels more urban and local. The trade is that the scene is smaller, and the rainy season can make beach marketing feel like a personal insult.

Chiang Mai is the routine machine

Chiang Mai is the least flashy of the three and often the easiest to live in for months. Cafes, gyms, markets and apartments are close together. It also has the most obvious seasonal caveat: smoke can change the answer for anyone with respiratory issues or a low tolerance for indoor living.

Visas and legal housekeeping

Do not choose on monthly rent and then improvise the immigration part. Thailand has the DTV for eligible remote workers and other routes explained in our Thailand visa guide. Vietnam offers an e-visa route, but it is still a visa country rather than a simple indefinite nomad base. Indonesia has specific visa categories and active enforcement, so confirm the current conditions before working locally or overstaying a tourist permission.

My practical verdict

Choose Bali for community and lifestyle, Da Nang for value and beach-city balance, and Chiang Mai for a calmer working routine. A sensible test is four to six weeks in each kind of environment before signing a long lease. The best base is the one whose annoying bits you can tolerate on a Tuesday.
